Film Originality/ Creativity– Originality is the pinnacle of creativity. Develop your own approach to storytelling and strengthen it, making it stand out. Judges are looking out for unique films
Direction- A good direction is a lot more than a drone shot. the camerawork, choice of shots, camera movement, how well did you bring the characters to life, As a director, you have to see the film from the perspective of the audience. Festivals jury rate the direction based on clarity and performance
Writing- communicate properly with your audience, take them through a journey, and make your characters relatable and real. At the end take your audience to the central theme.
Cinematography- A good cinematography capture the soul of the judge even when there is no audio. Have a proper detailed style and use your lighting, compositing, framing, and visual elements at your disposal to tell your story better
Performance- Acting performance is rated on how your actors or performer deliver the role. The character must connect with your viewers, communicate the script needs to the screen, and see the expression of a sad woman who just lost her son and no distraction make it clear.
Production Value- This is mistaken for high budget movies, you can have a low budget mobile film that has good production value, the perfect use of your props, colour, style, sound, costume all put together.
Pacing- The rate of movement and flow of events that occur as your film progresses. If your film pacing is too slow, it can feel long and boring and the festival jury may lose interest dont forget they curating these films for an audience.
Structure- Your story structure is key, the beginning, middle and end in a film they are no rules you must follow but in whatever approach you choose to use to tell your story make sure it excites your audience and it beyond their imagination
Sound / Music- Music is a large part of your film it dictates the emotions the audience will feel seeing your film, use a soundtrack that compliments the scene and the action, for better results use the service of a professional music composer or producers to score your movie. If you are on a budget they are a lot of royalty-free music you can use as well. If you get your sound and music right that is 70% work done.
